Inspirational research on films
Inspirational Films I've watched for research on our theme, Heres
a 5 minute clip on a top ten list of great horror/comedy films I've
chosen to post. A great list of films which not only show great
techniques of filming with angles, panning, dollying and movement,
but a really awesome idea of how me and my group intend on
filming our short film.
Enjoy!!!
Digetic Effect
Digetic Effect
Here we got put in groups to show audio effects.
Video edited by Jackson,
Leo is featured as main subject in clip.
diegetic (when you can see where the sound is coming from),
non-diegetic (when there is no evidence of where sound is coming from)

Research on Rule of thirds
Position up your subject with the
Three horizontal and vertical lines, middle intersections
represents the spots that your eye will be most drawn too.
Research Video Camera Techniques
Framing & Rule of Thirds
Here I've researched a little bit about framing and video camera techniques. This clip showed me
whether I'm invading personal space as the camera been me in person, or for a dramatic reason I'd want to be in some ones face. All can be told by just by relocating the camera tripod closer or far from the subject
or object, By tilting and adjusting the tripod can also communicate different angles to make it look
like your looking up or down at some one, or something.

Story Board
Here I've did a little planning (Pre-production). A story board,
commonly used by some film makers who like this method
for creating scenes.
For example, the making of toy story's, children's movie we watched in class,
shows the basics of creating a story boards, which they work off like guidelines.
Heres my first story board of me waking up and getting to uni on time, using only
6 frames. I've labelled them as well to show what kind of shot it will be, wether its
a close up panning shot, or a dolly out shot.
Here on this story board i get to class with the worst possible horror scenes.
Ft bruce lee and Scream.
I enjoyed this task very much, just the planning of a first movie fills me with excitement.
Im in to the whole cartoon theme, so this task kind of got me back on track. Actually
sparked my thinking caps back on.I enjoy using this method in the pre process of moving
image.
2 CARS 1 NIGHT
Here we have a clip made by n.z film director Taika Waititi.
2 CARS 1 NIGHT
LIGHTING:
Low lighting, mostly black white or grey,
PROPS:
Old school cars, Bike, old fashioned, A ring
COSTUMES:
Old farming looking clothes, Check it shirt
LOCATION:
Rural area, outside a bar or pub, local, out under street
light with the front of bar smoking area scene.
I really enjoyed this clip, as it was very hilarious I found it. Just the accent and slang
that was thrown between the 3 young actors clearly gave me a confirmation of where
this clip was shot, and where the location was telling me far north? ? ? Maybe. In a rural
area at a local bar or pub. Somewhere there parents go hang out after a hard weeks work.
I enjoy Taika's work a lot, a great influence on all upcoming comedians and actors.
Also a great influence for myself as I am a big fan of his work.

Research on opening Credits
OPENING CREDITS
Opening credits from the movie "Catch me if you can" Starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Where it shows a theme and they stuck to it which was awesome.
I like how they characterised his roll in the movie as a cartoon. Gives us a insight
of what the movie is about and his type of character been played on this movie.
Great film by the way. One of me all time favourites.
Research Camera Tips
BACK-LIGHTING IMAGES
I've decided to research more about the lighting and came across this beautiful image.
Its exactly the kind of aura and form id like to record my moving image in. I like how
it gives me a dramatic feeling and a hint of where and what theme we will be using.
Without warning you can basically tell that the scene would probably be about a scared
and frightened lady who's lost in the woods and is been chased by a psycho killer. :)
Well its the thought that's popped up into my head. I really am going to try and pull
this off and use this back lighting effect, which will go well with the horror, thriller comedy
theme we chose. It will take a lot of experimenting but will post up when we've aced it..
Basically Backlighting is a more a creative way to use sunlight and creates
a beautiful aura around the subject giving your images greater impact.

Experiment with Depth Of Focus
DEPTH OF FOCUS
HIGH SHOT
This still image is a technique to make the subject look small or weak in this angle.
For example if this was a interview this image would be a by stander that is getting
interviewed.
LOW SHOT
This Angle gives the object power, with this camera angle facing up
towards the subject, it gives an effect of sense of size, that the subject is
high above normal person height. Which to me is great for use if I were to
shoot a remake of godzilla or king kong. Giving the viewer a sense of size
greater then the average.
What worked? What did not work? What to work on next?
Having that perfect angle tilted up or down, to get that sense of size.
knowing the level of height with a accurate balanced tripod should really
do the job and leave you with a great outcome when recording moving image.
With still image I believe will still have a different outcome depending
on lighting and quality, or just lack of knowledge when using cameras like
myself. What to work on next is to experiment on high quality cameras
while recording moving image this time.
Research on Location
LOCATIONS
Here below I've listed a few pictures of possible locations I'd ideally have as
my shooting scene. I've decided to do a collaboration with two other class
mates where we are still deciding and planning out our story line as we go.
I've decided to partner up with Albert and Thomas as we all have a similar
liking in this one theme. Which ill talk more about in my next blog.
A Dark road to where?
To a old grave yard...
Next to an abandon church.
Here I've chosen these pictures I found on google images, which are very similar
to the locations we have in mind. As you can tell by the scenes, Its located between
a church and a grave yard. Well we all know where this scenery takes us to,
our very own short horror, thriller comedy film. We chose to take on a challenge
and see what we come up with. Three brains are better then one. Lets hope for the
best.
To the viewers, I'd like to give them the feel of loneliness in a isolated part of
new zealand, also a great thrill and awareness off what's lerking in the dark after
hours...
Research On Video Clip
A few camera movements iv spotted while watching a favourite comic of mines.
Here I've posted a video clip of Key and Peele.
In this video clip I've noticed that
a few camera movements have been used and different shots spotted through out
For example, at the beginning of this clip the camera movement dolly's to the right,
then a over the shoulder shot of the teacher, showing the the relation between
the student and the teacher. This beginning shot also shows the the location of
where the scene is been shot. (where in this case the scene is at a high school in
class where a substitute teacher is having trouble understanding a student).
Applying skills and analysis of camera handling techniques
Applying Skills
Here for my 24 x shot chase sequence I only took 12 pictures due to a lot of days off from class
and snowball of work to catch up on. Pictures are followed by basic handling technique captions.
Pictures where taken out of school grounds.

During these camera phone shots, I didn't really enjoy as I am lazy and don't have much
interest in photography, its just something others will create while I'd sit back and enjoy
the professionals definition of a great shot. For me finding the perfect shot and having to
label them is very stressing. But, I do like the knowledge learnt of these experiments
especially when its involved in our everyday life out off school, like knowing what kind of
shot you see when watching a movie or t.v programmes.and its exciting when you
can share it with others outside who have the same interests as you.

MOTOR ZOOMING
Is what iv chosen out of the lot to do a little surface research on, Iv been looking around
for artist on you tube who do a lot of "motor zooming" in there works and I came across this
clip which does not have a name of artist but video explains very clearly what to do and how
not to zoom while recording.
Wrong Video Exercise week 1
Moving Image
We were given the activity to split in groups and demonstrate what "Not" to do when it comes to moving image. My Group had to show through the lens of a camera what Head Hunting is.

Walking Sequence Ft Ralph
Walking Sequence
Here we were given a task to head out in groups of four to shoot a walking sequence
using and practicing camera movements. This involved Tripod use, pan, tilt, track, dolly
steadi cam and many more. In this walking sequence you'll notice we've used some
of these camera movements. I also added colour effects, and other transitions.
This clip was uploaded to premiere then had sound clips added to sequence shots
to add life and feel to it.
For myself I liked this experiment very much, I enjoy working with premiere to create
something you can actually enjoy, and feel a bit better about yourself. Pushes me to do
more and want to do better and also learn from, also how I can improve. I intend to
learn more transitions and effects using premiere, hopefully create something unique for my
presentation.
