Handmade Concertina Books
by Jenny Carrington

Name:
One Tree Hill Path
  Pen and ink 170 x 10cm
Pages:18
Handmade Project

The theme behind this picture I believe by the description I read would have to do with what the artist saw along the path while walking through the forest. His style to me seems to be very basic but understandable and gives the viewer a clear understanding of what his surroundings were at the time he was sketching. Narrative i guess in this piece of his artwork to me describes his type of peaceful scenery where he would either escape to for relaxation or just a nice walk. Events in this would probably be a memory as a young child discovering the big forest.

MICCI COHAN

My Fav’s Capsule

SIZE: A4
NUMBER OF PAGES:14
TYPE OF BOOK: Artists book
THEME:
Continuous feature containing shots of micci's favorite things.

Micci's book I feel has a big connection between her and what she favours the most. From personal paintings, sketchs and collages she puts altogether as one
to form her fav's capsule. Images in use look to me as if they were her personal
artwork, made back throughout the years growing up. While reading her biography
I read she gathered a bunch of her old magazines, pictures and artworks that
had lying around her room, put them altogether to create her art books. yes her book has a narrative. Events i guess she has interpreted in her book could be the
times she spent on her projects, a special time she had with a friend watching or reading about something on a poster or a movie.

 VINTAGE GLASS NECKLACES

Dated SEPTEMBER 3, 2013
size 5cm in height
By Castaway jewellers

These really creative and pretty necklaces are made with love and a few other things. Find a small vintage glass bottle and clean & soak if needed. Next add a chain from an old necklace or a thrift store that is a length you would like. Look through your old jewelry for charms or use some pieces of beach glass or polished old tiles from old broken pottery or old plates or cups. Wire the bottle around the neck and add the chain. Leave a few inches of chain dangling down to hook the charms up to. If you are using items like beach glass, just wrap the wire around the tile and hook with a couple of craft store rings. Now comes the most important part – Find some really pretty beach sand and fill. Add a hand written poem or an inspirational word and add a cork .

Materials:

  • Small glass bottle recycled. Soak and Clean if needed
  • Cork, small jump rings – Craft Store
  • Chain – use an old necklace or craft store or flea market find
  • Adornments – old charms, tiles, beach glass, old earrings, button, even an old small key

Ben Beattie

Pounamu
Dated 2012 size: 6 cm wide

What I personally like and enjoy about this piece of work, is that its famously recognised  as an New Zealand jewellery icon, Green stone widely known as a form of green nephrite jade found in the South Island of New Zealand.

Also because the designs used in Maori artwork ( necklaces, pendants, wood carvings, tattoo, etc) all carry a spiritual meaning.  Early Maori did not have a written history, so their arts and crafts took on the role of being a record of spiritual values and beliefs, as well as a historical family record.

Bone and greenstone jade ( pounamu) pendants and necklaces, worn against the skin and passed down through the generations, were believed to absorb the spirit of the person who wore them, making them a powerful connection to people passed.

Hei Tiki

Dated 2012 size 7cm wide

Meaning of Hei-Tiki:

The Maori believe Hei-Tiki was the first man in the Maori world; he came from the stars. Hei-Tiki is a powerful good-luck symbol. Tilted head is thinking, hand is strength, mouth communication, heart is love and loins fertility. The wearer of the Hei-Tiki is assumed to be clear-thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable; their strength is their character.

Materials used:
The kinds of stone formerly employed for stone tools were rehu (?flint), pounamu (nephrite), mataa(quartz, flint), and onewa; while fine parts of carving were finished with minute toki made of shells, such as those of the paua, kororiwha, andtoitoi.

                             Johanna Zellmer

As a New Zealand resident Johanna Zellmer wonders which label she chooses to identify with: German, Pakeha, Other?
"It is interesting for me, as a German, to tick the box 'Other'. Germans have, since the second world war, been thought of as those who took otherness to an extreme."

Johanna's work with German commemorative coins questions the challenges of national representation, an uncomfortable topic for Germany. The jeweller has re-configured the complete set of German commemorative 10DM coins. Each coin was cut and forged, then inserted into a custom made solander display box embossed with the text of the coin’s rim, which remains legible on the base of the new ‘coinscape’. These coinscape scenes commemorate significant milestones in German history that may have been overlooked by many 'Others'.

The symbols i see in all her work, is a eagle, which was a symbol
germany used on there coins.

The German Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) dates back to the time of Charlemagne, the first Frankish ruler to be crowned emperor by the pope (AD 800), ultimately derived from the eagle standard of the Roman army.
By the 13th century, the black eagle icon on a gold field was generally recognised as the imperial coat of arms. During the medieval period, the imperial eagle was mostly single-headed. A double-headed eagle is attributed to Frederick II in the Chronica Majora (ca. 1250). In 1433 the double-headed eagle was adopted by the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund. Since then the double-headed eagle came to be used as the symbol of the German emperor, and hence as the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. From the 12th century, the Emperors would have a personal coat of arms separate from the imperial one. Starting with Albert II (r. 1438–39), each Emperor bore arms with an inescutcheon of his personal arms on the torso of a two-headed eagle.

Find a piece of jewellery another culture that you are
unfimiliar with

The Fish Hook
The fish hook or matau is a symbol of protection of the wearer over water and represents strength and determination and is said to bring peace, prosperity and good health.
Rimu wood pendant fashioned from native New Zealand Rimu in the style of the Matau or Fish Hook with paua inlays.

The pendant measures 60mm (2 1/2 inches) tall and 40mm (1 1/2 inches) wide.
The fish hook was an important resource for Maori, as the sea provided a rich source of food. In Maori mythology, New Zealand was fished up out of the sea by Maui.
The fish hook signifies abundance and plenty, strength and determination. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health. It is a device for catching good luck and energy, and is believed to provide safe journey over water. It is therefore considered a good luck charm by travellers, boaties, fishermen and surfers.

Ive learnt that this culture is a very spiritual, they have a very
great meaning behing this beutiful piece of jewellery.

                                                                      Tripple Elvis

Many of Warhol's most famous paintings take images of celebrities from popular media as his source. Elvis is based upon a publicity still made from the 1960 film 'Flaming Star'. Elvis in combo boots and gear, pointing a gun instead of swinging a guitar, embodies two American icons; The bad boy star and the stereotypical cowboy. The life size image is printed numerous times on a background covered with silver paint, suggesting both the repetition of film frames and hollywoods's silver screen.

By Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s.

What was happeneing in the world in 1963?

1963 The biggest news from 1963 was the assassination of the US President Kennedy on November 22nd which thrust Lyndon Johnson into the role of president and the murder two days later of Lee Harvey Oswald by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. This was a difficult time to become president with the mounting troubles in Vietnam where the Viet Cong Guerrillas had now killed 80 American Advisers and the continued campaign for civil rights by the black community caused violent reactions from whites including Mississippi, Virginia and Alabama where the black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr was arrested.

My experience with screen printing

SCREEN PRINTING

My experience trying out screen printing really amazed me.
I had fun in the process of making my screen print, especially
the part where i had my personal design printed on to sheets of
different paper. My screen print, inspired by nature, was about
my peace a at mind. Represented by a picture of a calm day at the
beach under palm trees. A place where i found peace at last,
representing my mental and phisical journeys of day to day
struggles. Here are a few pictures of my outcome.

What I enjoyed about this artist and the way he expresses
his art, is the way he uses a wide range of colours to make
up mostly celebrity portraits. The colours and the stenciled
like style attracts my attention. I enjoy his art very much
and I believe has a big influence on pop cultural.

This screenprint of famous former world heavy weight
champion boxer mohammed ali really caught my eye.
Has a mix of realness and cartoonish like in this screen print.
Something i really admire about warhol.

New Zealand painting - Sensing The Surface

                                                               Artist : Rita Angus

Original Painting                                                            My Painting

I had a great time working on this particular piece of art done by rita angus as it
caught my attention at first when we had to choose who we wanted to paint. Credited as one of the leading figures in twentieth century New Zealand art. She worked primarily in oil and water colour, and is well known for herportraits and landscapes. She was also influenced by the English painter Christopher Perkins' 1931 painting of Mount Taranaki, a response to New Zealand's distinctive clear lightning.

The reason i chose this painting was because it stood out to me, the emotions on the face of this painting gave me. Very dull look, no expressions at all, it also reminded  me of my grandma.

If you notice the different changes i made with the character in the painting, I slightly changed her beanie into a bandanna, With oil paint i started my outlines, then painting the inside out, with dark black i gave my painting a hard edge by darkening the edges and outlines.

Portraiture Painting

Rene Magritte
René François Ghislain Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images that fell under the umbrella of surrealism.  What catchs my attention with his unique style of painting is that we have similar views, I once had a vision of statue heads bleeding, but the difference between us was that i had visions of them in my head , rene had them painted on canvas's for a worldwide audience to share this beuty with.

Leonardo da Vinci
What i like about this particular painting of the famous da vinci is that his art work shows to me personally a long history of olden day styles, which alot still have trouble trying to follow these days. I am always fascinated by his artwork and he will always be a great inspiration to me and many others.

Process of paintings and feedback on experience
Before we started doing our partners portrait, we took photos, three shots to be exact, from these three shots we had to choose the one which best suited us personally to paint on our canvas's using oil paint. I worked with thomas. We then cropped them , brightened and darkened some parts to see more detailed parts of our partners portrait pictures. We had to make a colour chart of our partners flesh tones and follow that while we painted, but with me, I was having so much fun painting, I got carried away with the colour tones, just having fun with it, I mixed up afew colours changing the skin colour tones of thomas's skin. As I was never good at mixing and matching colours, I chose to stick with what I was use to, which was a simple colour up painted on my canvas guided by my lines which i painted on first. Started from painting the eyes inside, i slowly then brought them out by out lining them with  black, which always brings out the best of the inside colours. moving on out to the outside of his face, i used black alot to bring   out the shape and colours of his face.  At the most, it took me about a week and a half to complete my partners portrait. I was glad with the results because of the feed back from thomas, as he laughed and smiled about his portrait. How I felt about this project, I enjoyed much of it, learning new skills with oil painting, learning the mixture of different colours to make specific tones , to make portraits more detailed. I learnt alot from this hands on experience an hope to learn much more through out this year.

Forgery Research and Experience

Forgery
This week we've been given a personal task, to choose a famous
artist and a favourite piece of his/her artwork to make a forgery of. I chose
Rene Magritte and his famous painting off clouds in the sky on a head sculpture.
First off, we did a little d.i.y project making our own surface or canvas to paint on. I had a little fun playing with the drop saw, but didn't end for long. I started of drawing my guidelines on my hardboard, then linking up  each block with the same grid pattern i had drawn over my photo copy of my forgery picture. Then came the fun part of painting.

"René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist best known for his witty and thought-provoking images and his use of simple graphics and everyday objects, giving new meanings to familiar things. Before finding success as an artist, Magritte was designed wallpaper and advertisements. After a poorly received solo show in 1927, he moved to Paris and became firmly lodged in the surrealist movement"
                                                                   Forgery Painting

Using acrylic paint, I was able to finish my forgery.
Then came the making of our canvas's, which to me personally, wasn't exciting at all,
as I am lazy when it comes to making things.
Why we made these canvas's?
Because we had the opportunity as an individual , to partner up with some one and paint them using only oil paint. This personally was a very hard task as it was my first time using oil paint. I found that it took longer for oil to settle or dry up on my canvas then using acrylic paint. But on the other hand, it was a great way to learn new skills using different kinds of paint.

week 3

This week with emma, we dicussed our different views on propaganda. For me i did not know the meaning of this word until now, i enjoyed the way we, as a class brainstormed it and got the real meaning to it, and how it had its connection with what we were doing in art class. My knowlege of the meaning i learned about this word propaganda, that it was an image that had power to influence people, usually linked to politics.  I also learnt the difference between graphic art and design. When designing my a3 posters, I learned to use the negative space more or less to bring the heading or message of my poster out broad so it could be read from a distance, or stand out and be eye catching

week 2

This week with emma, as an individual task we had to design a poster with a simple directive. I enjoyed this task making posters but did not like the designing process of cutting and cropping out the lettering for my posters. My posters heading was " You dont need drugs to have fun, act retarded". My personal meaning behind this message is that our youth these days turn to alcohol and drugs for comfort or as some of us say " our problem solver".  This can mostly be the starting of   a longtime result of abuse, for not only ourselves, but the loved ones who surround us, that is only if we miss use them for partying and personal satisfaction. We do not need a certain limit of drunkness or high to have fun, or to bring out the happiness inside to feel happy about ourselves.
